A Day in the life - Ben O'Connell

Ben O'Connell is an Associate Director, based in London, UK however, he has worked on projects throughout the world.

What is your role with Systech and where are you based?

I am an Associate Director based predominantly in London, but I have undertaken work for clients all over the UK and Canada.

Tell us about some of the projects you have worked on?

Since joining in Systech in June 2021 I’ve been lucky to be involved in a wide range of commissions, ranging from claims through to advising on procurement options for large infrastructure projects.

What is your typical day?

My day typically starts at around 7am with a strong cup of coffee and my note pad. I usually spend the first 20 minutes mapping out my actions, often updating my list from the day before, as well as prioritising the most important things I need to achieve. This is a crucial part of my day, as my current commission often requires me to be in and out of meetings for much of the day, making it vital that I don’t lose sight of those key things that need to be done. Throughout the day I am in constant communication with stakeholders within the client organisation coordinating key aspects of the commission and ensuring everything is on programme.

What are the interesting aspects of your work?

For me it is the problem solving element of any commission which I find most interesting. There is nothing more satisfying than finding a workable solution to a problem that initially seemed insurmountable. It’s also great to work with experienced clients and gain an understanding of how their business works and what makes them successful.

It’s clear to me that if you have the right attitude and commitment there is plenty of space to grow.

What has been your greatest achievement working for Systech?

In early 2022 I was advising one of our international teams working in Canada. I was able to work with them on a commission whereby they required some expertise on procurement routes which were typically more well established in the UK. My experience enabled me to help the team navigate their challenges and come up with a workable solution.
